Co-founded by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Chongqing Municipal Government, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications (CQUPT) is one of the key universities of China in its fields. With information science and technology as its main feature and advantage, it earns itself a nation-wide reputation in areas of posts and telecommunications, as well as in information technology. It was established in 1950, a time for the industry of posts and telecommunications in China to take the first step; in 1959, named by the State Council as Chongqing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications, it began its undergraduate education; in 1965, it became one of the 10 institutes in Sichuan Province which was entitled to grant Master Degree to students; in 2000, its jurisdiction was transferred to Chongqing Municipality from the former Ministry of Industry and Information Technology; in 2006, the institute was renamed the present name CQUPT, and an agreement on jointly establishing and developing Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications was signed between the former Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Chongqing Municipal Government.

CQUPT serves as a comprehensive university with distinctive features and excellence in higher education. More than 20,000 students study in campus, including approximately 3,000 postgraduates. A well-balanced faculty team currently consists of over 1,600 members, among whom there are 140 professors, 350 associate professors and 10 adjunct professors -- academicians of Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). What’s more, our school alumni, vice president of CAE, Wu Hequan is the university’s honorary president. In addition to 10 key disciplines with provincial or ministry level, CQUPT owns 16 key laboratories, engineering research centers, and humanities and social science bases, entitled by Chongqing Municipal Government, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. At present, there are 41 undergraduate programs, 4 postgraduate programs of first class discipline and 20 postgraduate programs of second class discipline. Meanwhile, “Master of Engineering” is enrolled and cultivated in 8 subjects. Empowered by the Ministry of Education, CQUPT has gained the qualification of recommending undergraduate students directly to postgraduate programs without entrance examination. Not only has it been authorized to enroll overseas students, including overseas Chinese students, and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, but also has formed sound cooperative relationship with many prestigious domestic universities to educate doctoral students, while cultivate postgraduate under the alliance of foreign universities.

CQUPT commits itself to independent innovations and constant exploration. Long been known as "the place of origin of China's digital communications", the university all along strives for the development of telecommunication industry and the revitalization of national information industry. In the 70s of the last century, it won National Science Conference Prize in 1978 for successfully developing the first set of ITU (International Telegraph Union) standard 24-channel, 30/32-channel pulse encoder and 120-channel multiplexer, plus its supporting devices. In the 80s, it undertook the national seventh five-year scientific and technological research project --"TDM/FDM60-channel transmultiplexing equipment research," which brought the university the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award in 1992. Since 1998, as a major research unit, the university has participated in setting standards of the 3G mobile communication and developing end products. With the birth of first Chinese standard TD-SCDMA, another second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award was settled in the university. In the year of 2005, it successfully developed the world's first TD mobile phone sample and the world's first 0.13-micron-processed TD-core chips, which gained us the honor of “Chinese University’s Top Ten Scientific and Technological Development in 2005”. Being a core member, the university played an important role in the establishment of the first national "EPA Communication Standard for Industrial Measurement and Control System", which became the first in China to own independent intellectual property right and was recognized by IEC as international standard in the field of industrial automation. In 2007, the project “Networked Manufacturing System and Supporting Technologies for Integrated Operation of Manufacturing Device” won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award. Furthermore, 2 other projects were granted the second prizes of National Technology Invention Award. One is the project of “Core Technology and Application of TD-SCDMA Chip Platform”, the university took the lead to accomplish in 2008. The other is the project of “A New Generation of High-performance Fieldbus Control System - EPA” in 2009. In the same year, the university was entitled the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, due to the project of “Core Chip of Process Industry Fieldbus, Interoperable Technology and Integrated Control System Development”. CQUPT has been conducting research in national defense, with classified qualification of B in research and producing defense weaponry. As a result of the outstanding contribution it made in the information industry, CQUPT has been awarded the title of Advanced Collective for Scientific and Technologic Innovation in National Information Industry.

CQUPT is a university which attaches great importance to quality education and talents fostering. It is a base for cultural quality education of national university students, the first batch of training bases for the information professionals in China, a science popularity base for communication, an educational base for software and micro-electronic talents in Chongqing, an innovation base for postgraduate education. Renown for “the cradle of talents in China’s communication and information”, CQUPT has cultivated and sent over 60,000 professionals to all fields. In last 5 years, great achievements have been accomplished: 4 specialties with national characteristic has been built, together with 7 specialties with Chongqing Municipal characteristic, one excellent course with state level and one bilingual teaching model course, 19 excellent courses with municipal level, and 5 demonstration centers of lab teaching with national and municipal level; 100 teaching materials covering various subjects have been published; over 80 teaching reform projects in either state or provincial and ministry level have been assumed; 3 second prizes for “National Teaching Achievement Award” , and 6 first prizes for “Education & Teaching Achievement Award of Chongqing” have been obtained. CQUPT enjoys a high pass rate in “National College English Test” and “Computer Rank Examination”. In contests nation-wide scale, such as “the Challenge Cup”, Electronic Design, Mathematics Modeling, etc. students of CQUPT have achieved outstanding results. More than 120 prizes of state level and 530 awards of ministry or provincial level have been acquired. In accordance with the high performance of the students, the employment rate of is very optimistic. For the undergraduates, the number stays steadily above 95%, and the postgraduates are far too popular to meet the demand.

CQUPT puts great emphasis on international communication and continuous expansion in cooperating production, study and research. Based on information industry, the university takes the initiative to serve the local economic and social development, constantly exploring new model of integrating production, study and research, endeavoring to build a platform for open education. As the only member in the union of TD-SCDMA comes from higher education institute, CQUPT has formed a strategic alliance with many organizations and institutes such as DATANG Telecommunication, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Institute of Computing Technology. It also co-founded scientific research base with Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China Electronics Technology Group. Along with its long-term collaborative relationship with China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, Huawei, and ZTE, school-enterprise cooperation base was constructed with corporations like Chang’an, Silian and Chongqing Iron and Steel. Under the joint effort of Chongqing New North Zone, it established a base for talent development and scientific and technological achievements transformation. A school-locality strategic cooperation with Chongqing Qijiang County was also realized. The university takes active move in international cooperation and communication, setting up 9 co-teaching and scientific researching institutes with various countries like Singapore, South Korea, Russia and the European Union, as well as launching joint personnel training project with Canada, United States, Britain, Italy, etc. During these years, the university has hosted the "Global Mobile Communications Conference", "2008 International Conference on Industrial Wireless Communication", "International Conference on Optical Internet Technology" and other influential international conferences.

Boasting of its mature infrastructure and picturesque campus, CQUPT fosters an environment of a harmonious human-nature relationship, which is perfect for living and studying. The university now occupies an area of 3,800 acres with a floor space up to 550,000 square meters. To keep itself abreast of the information revolution, CQUPT has established a network system with more than 20,000 computers. The library holds a sizeable collection of more than 1,000,000 volumes of P-books and over 1,200,000 volumes of E-books. Besides, it is well-equipped with spacious classrooms, standard sports-fields, and comfortable living conditions. In recent years, CQUPT has been granted dozens of honorable awards such as the “Advanced Unit of Constructing National Spiritual Civilization”, “Exemplary Unit of National Afforestation”, the “Advanced Collective for Comprehensive Treatment for the Public Security of School and Surroundings”, “Best Civilization Unit in Chongqing”, and “Garden-style Unit in Chongqing”
